Public policy expert and former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sam Amadi, has criticised First Lady Oluremi Tinubu over her advice to Nigerians to venture into small-scale businesses like selling akara, roasting corn, and producing kulikuli amid current economic hardships.
Reacting via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, June 26, 2026, Amadi described the First Lady’s remarks as more reflective of political strategy than sound economic governance.
“The First Lady, like her husband, @officialABAT is an astute politician. She knows what works best for Nigerian politics: give women party leaders brand new cars and give akara money to captive voters who will still vote you on the basis of inducement, ethnicity and religion. I applaud their dexterity,” Amadi wrote.
He, however, argued that political astuteness does not equate to effective governance. “The only problem is that the competences for being an astute politician do not translate to competences to govern well. Nigeria will continue to stagnate and the poor will be poorer under this astuteness,” he added.
Amadi’s comments were in response to remarks made by Senator Oluremi Tinubu after she hosted the wives of the 36 state governors in Abuja.
The First Lady had urged Nigerians not to lose hope despite the prevailing economic challenges and highlighted her office’s provision of grants (not loans) to support vulnerable citizens in starting small businesses.
She also mentioned various interventions in healthcare, nutrition, agriculture, education, ICT training, and social investment programmes, while encouraging citizens to key into President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
