The Niger State House of Assembly on Tuesday suspended its plenary sitting indefinitely due to unresolved issues with the state executive arm.
The decision followed a motion moved by Mohammed Abubakar-Kabir, member representing Chanchaga Constituency (popularly known as Ustaz), who urged the House to halt proceedings until all pending matters with the executive are fully addressed.
Though he did not publicly specify the exact issues, Abubakar-Kabir warned that posterity would judge the current lawmakers harshly if they continued to overlook the disagreements. He stressed the need to protect the independence of the legislature.
The motion was seconded by Abdulrahman Gambo, representing Borgu Constituency.
A counter-motion was moved by Jibrin Ndagi-Baba, member for Lavun Constituency, who argued that suspending the day’s business was unnecessary. The debate became heated, nearly turning rowdy, with a majority of members supporting the indefinite suspension.
Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkindaji intervened to restore calm and appealed for respect for differing views before putting the original motion to a vote. Members in favour of the suspension carried the day.
Following the vote, the House retired into an executive session to deliberate on the unresolved issues.
The development highlights ongoing tensions between the legislative and executive arms in Niger State. As of the time of this report, the state executive is yet to issue an official reaction to the Assembly’s decision.
