NDPC Probes INEC Over Alleged Emeka Ike Data Leak

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched an investigation into the alleged leak of voter information belonging to Nollywood actor and politician, Emeka Ike.

NDPC’s National Commissioner, Dr Vincent Olatunji, confirmed the probe during a media briefing in Abuja, stressing that the matter is being treated with urgency due to its implications for electoral integrity and public trust.

The controversy began after Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister, shared screenshots online that appeared to contain Ike’s voter registration details accessed from an INEC portal.

The post sparked widespread concern about possible unauthorized access to the electoral body’s database.

INEC has denied reports of a major breach, insisting the incident stemmed from misuse of valid internal credentials rather than an external cyberattack.

Meanwhile, Olayinka and an electoral officer have been questioned by investigators.Olatunji emphasized that the NDPC is engaging both INEC and Ike, noting: “The one of INEC is really sensitive because we are moving towards elections. And it speaks to the credibility of the database. It’s of utmost urgency, and we are moving immediately.”

He explained that the commission evaluates breaches based on severity, sensitivity, and impact, prioritizing remediation over punishment when organizations demonstrate compliance.

The NDPC is also working with INEC to raise data protection awareness among political parties, many of which collect large volumes of personal information without adequate safeguards.

As part of its broader campaign, the commission has translated the Nigeria Data Protection Act into Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo to deepen public understanding of privacy rights.

Olatunji stressed that protecting personal data is now integral to national security and public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process.
