The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked Nigerians to
disregard results circulating on social media as the outcome of its nationwide
primary elections.
The party held the primaries across the country on Saturday
for various elective political offices.
However, over the past few hours, some results have been
circulating on X, suggesting that certain aspirants, including Ovie Omo-Agege,
former deputy senate president, lost out in the exercise.
Reacting to the development in a statement on Sunday, Osa
Director, national publicity secretary of the NDC, said only the party’s
national executive council (NEC) has the authority to announce primaries’
results.
“The general public is hereby urged to disregard the various
results circulating on social media as the outcome of the nationwide primaries
conducted by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on the 28th and 29th of May,
2026,” the statement reads.
“The results of the primaries are with the National
Executive Council (NEC) of our great party. They are solely responsible for
announcements of results.”
Director said Seriake Dickson, the party’s national leader,
has summoned a NEC meeting to consider the outcome of the primaries.
According to him, all members of the party’s organ are
expected to arrive in Abuja for a pre-NEC meeting on Tuesday, while the main
meeting will hold on Wednesday.
He added that the public and stakeholders would be informed
of the results after the party forwards the names of its candidates to the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“The general public and stakeholders will be availed of the
results of our primaries when we send the list of candidates to fly our party’s
flag to the INEC,” the statement added.
The party did not hold primaries for the FCT senate race and
its presidential ticket, paving the way for Peter Obi to emerge as its sole
aspirant and eventual candidate.
