Muslim Media Watch Group Calls on Nigerian Govt to Slash Petrol Prices Below N700/Litre

The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has urged the Federal Government to compel petroleum marketers to significantly reduce fuel prices, citing the drop in global oil prices following the ceasefire between Iran and the United States.

In a statement issued on Friday, June 26, 2026, and signed by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the group argued that there is “no basis” for keeping petrol prices above N1,000 per litre now that international crude oil prices have returned to pre-war levels.

“The America/Israel against Iran war that forced the prices of the petroleum products up has subsided following ceasefire agreement between Iran and America hence, there is no basis for petroleum marketers in Nigeria to keep the price of Premium Motor Spirit in particular to above N1000 per litre,” the statement said.

The group described the current high pump prices as “highly insensitive and inhuman,” accusing marketers of economic sabotage.

It called for prices of petrol and diesel which heavily influence the cost of living  to be forced down below N1,000 per litre, and specifically urged a return to the “pre-war price of N700 per litre of petrol.”

MMWG noted that religious bodies had prayed intensely for the Gulf conflict to end and questioned why some parties were still prolonging Nigerians’ hardship despite the resolution.

The group highlighted that other countries affected by the war are already benefiting from lower fuel costs.

It appealed to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to intervene urgently and warned that indiscriminate price hikes by marketers would prolong Nigeria’s economic hardship.

The organisation commended the Dangote Group for its role in refining reforms and efforts toward fair pricing but urged the company to take a stronger lead in pushing prices down to ease the burden on citizens.

This call comes amid ongoing public pressure for relief as global oil benchmarks have eased.
