Teachers protest in Lagos, demand release of abducted Oyo Schoolchildren, Staff

Teachers in Lagos State on Tuesday took to the streets in protest over the abduction of pupils, students, and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, lamenting the lack of safety in schools across the country.

The rally, organised by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in compliance with a directive from the union’s national leadership, saw hundreds of teachers march from Ikeja to the Lagos State House of Assembly, demanding the immediate rescue of the abducted victims.

They were received by the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

Addressing the protesters, Speaker Obasa described state policing as a lasting solution to Nigeria’s security challenges and called for collective support to improve safety nationwide.

“We are all concerned about the situation, particularly the one that happened in Ogbomoso, Oyo State,” Obasa said, noting that the Lagos Assembly had consistently pushed for state police.

He particularly criticised some social media content creators, accusing them of exploiting tragic incidents for personal gain.

“You cannot make a profit out of some people’s misfortune. What we should be doing is looking for lasting solutions and rescuing the teachers and pupils,” he added.

Obasa appealed for calm and assured the teachers that both the federal and state governments were working to secure the release of the abducted victims.

He also highlighted Lagos’ efforts in strengthening security through legislation, such as the law establishing the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps.

Earlier, Lagos State NUT Chairman, Mr Akintoye Hassan, said the protest was not limited to the recent Oyo incident but reflected years of attacks on schools and education workers, citing the Chibok and Dapchi abductions.

Hassan urged Nigerians to stop politicising insecurity and view it as a collective national challenge.
