Labour Party ratifies 1,211 candidates for 2027 elections, Otti warns against division

The Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party (LP) has formally ratified 1,211 candidates for various elective positions ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party announced the decision at its national executive council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

The development follows the conclusion of its nationwide primaries held on May 27 for 1,491 positions, including 28 governorship, 99 senatorial, 307 house of representatives, and 776 state assembly seats.

On May 30, Chibuzo Okereke, a governance expert, emerged as the party’s presidential candidate through a consensus process involving LP members and stakeholders.

Speaking at the NEC meeting, Alex Otti, governor of Abia, urged the candidates to embrace unity, warning that internal divisions could undermine the party’s chances in the next elections.

“Elections within the party should never create permanent divisions. The contest is over; the assignment has just begun,” Otti said.

“Our opponents will seek to exploit divisions among us. We must not give them the opportunity.”

Represented by Ikechukwu Emetu, his deputy, the governor urged the candidates to foster reconciliation across party structures, particularly with fellow aspirants who lost out in the primaries.

“We must bring everyone to the table and harness the strength, experience, and networks of all those who participated,” he added.

“You must therefore see yourselves not merely as candidates, but as ambassadors of hope and agents of change. We must speak with one voice and mobilise collectively.”

Corroborating Otti’s position, Usman, LP’s national chairperson, also stressed the need for unity, noting that the party belongs to no individual.

“We had a successful primary election that took place all over the nation. Today, we are meeting here not just to thank God but to adopt what we have done all over the nation and ratify it,” she said.

“As I always say, in every political party, there are bound to be people who are aggrieved because they didn’t get things the way they wanted.

“So, I want to plead that we should all sheathe our swords. Let us continue to work together for the development of our party.

“There must be reconciliation, and we need to work together. The party does not belong to any one person.

“The more members we have, the better for our political party because the essence of having a political party is to use it as a vehicle to win elections.”
