The management of Kwara State Polytechnic has suspended a lecturer captured in a viral video physically reprimanding students.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, by Halimat Garba, the
institution’s public relations officer (PRO), said the video had generated
concerns among stakeholders and members of the public.
Garba said the individuals seen in the footage were
candidates of the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) programme who
arrived late for their ongoing examinations, and not students of the
polytechnic.
She said while the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s
actions were yet to be fully established, the method adopted was unacceptable.
“The approach taken was wholly inappropriate as the
Polytechnic stands firmly against any form of violence or physical punishment
as a means of discipline,” the statement reads.
“We believe that education should be rooted in respect,
understanding, and constructive guidance, and that there are far more effective
and humane ways to instil important values in students.”
The PRO said the unnamed lecturer has been suspended from
duty with immediate effect, pending the outcome of investigations into the
incident.
She assured the public that the incident is being treated
seriously, adding that measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence.
Garba also reaffirmed the polytechnic’s management
commitment to the values and integrity for which the institution is known.
