Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has been dragged before the Kwara State High Court by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq over allegations of cyberbullying and defamation.
The dispute stems from Saraki’s April 17, 2026 social media post, which the governor claims questioned his educational qualifications and tarnished his reputation.
Abdulrazaq’s legal team argued that the statement was capable of inciting unrest in the state and requested a bench warrant to compel Saraki’s appearance in court.
Saraki’s lawyers, however, countered that the case was improperly filed and that the high court lacked jurisdiction.
They maintained that Saraki’s comments on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) were a legitimate exercise of his freedom of speech as opposition leader.Justice M. O. Folorunso adjourned the matter until July 3, 2026, when a ruling will be delivered on the applications from both sides.
Meanwhile, Saraki urged his supporters to remain calm and law-abiding. In a statement issued by Abdulganiyu Abdulqadir, he described the case as an attempt to silence him, vowing to continue speaking on issues of public interest.
He reminded supporters that the current administration has only 11 months left in office, assuring them that “oppressive tactics will come to nought.”
