Bashir Ahmad, former media aide to late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has claimed that Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate Rabi’u Kwankwaso cannot remain in any political party where he does not enjoy full control.
Ahmad made the statement on Monday via his verified X handle, reacting to the crisis in the North West chapter of the NDC, particularly in Kano State, where some candidates were replaced under a power-sharing deal between factions of the Kwankwasiyya Movement ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Ahmad, Kwankwaso’s political history shows a consistent demand for dominance over party structures, especially in Kano.
“I have told many people that Senator Kwankwaso cannot comfortably remain in any political party where he does not enjoy total control, particularly over the Kano State party structure,” he wrote.
He recalled that Kwankwaso left the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2018 despite its strength as a political platform, because he could not secure absolute control.
“For Kwankwaso, maintaining complete dominance over the party machinery in Kano has always been a non-negotiable priority,” Ahmad added.
The remarks come amid growing tension within the NDC, as internal disputes over candidate lists and party structures continue to test the unity of the opposition ahead of the 2027 polls.
