Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State and been named the party’s candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District in the next election.
She was officially received into the party on Wednesday at a rally held at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta.Ogun PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, presented the party flag to her and announced her candidature.
“On behalf of our national chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, and the entire national working committee of the PDP, I, Abayomi Tella, PhD, the state chairman of the PDP, and on behalf of PDP Ogun Central, present to our revered sister, Prof. Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, this flag as the authority of the party for her candidature for the Senate in Ogun Central,” Tella said.
Obasanjo-Bello pledged to abide by the PDP’s constitution, manifesto and code of conduct.“I commit myself to the ideals of the PDP. I shall serve the people of Ogun State and Nigeria with integrity, humility and dedication, prioritising their welfare above personal and sectional interests,” she said.
Return to Old Party
The development marks her return to the PDP, the platform on which she represented Ogun Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011 before defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in January 2026.
She resigned from the APC on June 8 after losing the party’s governorship ticket. Obasanjo-Bello cited disrespect, betrayal and unfair treatment by the APC leadership as reasons for her exit. She claimed some of those behind the alleged mistreatment were people she had previously helped politically.
She remains confident of victory in the next election, describing herself as the best senator ever to represent Ogun Central.
APC Governorship Fallout
Obasanjo-Bello joined the APC in February 2026 and initially showed interest in the governorship race.
She later stepped down after the party adopted Senator Solomon Adeola as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election. In her resignation letter, she accused the APC of failing to honour agreements and alleged that some of her supporters were maltreated and barred from the consensus meeting venue.
