Nentawe Yilwatda, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has joked that he wished he could poach Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Yilwatda spoke on Monday during the flag-off of the
construction of Collector Road CO1 from the Nile University area to Ring Road
III and the extension of the Body of Benchers Road in Abuja.
The APC chairman praised Wike for his performance as FCT
minister, describing him as hardworking and tireless.
“The workaholic, ever-working and tireless minister, and I
don’t know when you sleep,” Yilwatda said.
“The minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, you know that I’m jealous
that you are in the PDP. I wish I could corner you and bring you to APC.”
Yilwatda also referenced Wike’s support for President Bola
Tinubu during the 2023 election, saying the PDP had “loaned” the former
governor of Rivers to the APC.
“But I’m happy that PDP borrowed you to us in 2023 and I saw
your letter then to the National Working Committee of PDP borrowing you to us,”
he said.
“I don’t know that it would lead to such a remarkable feat
by you that what APC can do, some of the PDP members can also do it.”
Wike, a member of the PDP, has maintained a close working
relationship with the Tinubu administration since his appointment as FCT
minister in August 2023.
His role in the APC-led federal government has continued to
generate debate within the opposition party, with some PDP members accusing him
of working against the party’s interests.
