Osita Ngwu, the senator representing Enugu West and a member of the Senate committee on works, says the administration of President Bola Tinubu has “carried the south-east along” through the execution of several federal projects across the region.
Speaking in Enugu on Monday during the presidential media team's inspection of the Eke Obinagu flyover as it toured the federal government’s projects in the south-east, Ngwu said he had previously lamented that the region was abandoned.
The Eke Obinagu flyover is a 350‑metre
dual-carriageway bridge linking Enugu and Ebonyi states, awarded by the federal
government in 2024.
“Being honest, I was among those who once said that the
south‑east
was abandoned in the past. But that is no longer the case,” the lawmaker said.
“Since the coming of the Tinubu administration, Enugu has
not been abandoned. We have been carried along, and several federal road
projects are ongoing in the state.
Ngwu commended the Tinubu administration for completing the
bridge within a remarkable timeframe.
Smart Okpi, federal controller of works in Enugu, who noted
that the project was completed in April, said the quality of work conforms
fully with federal ministry of works standards.
While noting that the flyover would decongest the traffic
that usually characterise the Eke-Obinagu area, the federal controller said the
location was a nightmare for commuters before the construction.
‘TINUBU SUPPORTS IDEAS THAT CATALYSE SOUTH-EAST ECONOMY’
Chidiebere Onyia, secretary to the Enugu state government
(SSG), said the process of concessioning the Akanu Ibiam International Airport
has commenced.
“What you see behind me is the international wing of the
airport that had, before this government came, not been active in terms of
conclusion of the construction phase of it,” Onyia said.
“Clearly, without the conclusion of the construction phase,
the operationalisation would not have taken place.
“So, under this government, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and the
leadership of the president, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the governor had
approached the aviation sector to start the process of concessioning this
airport standing behind me, the international airport, when in alignment with
the broader vision for aviation tourism in Enugu state.
“The context is not just the concessioning. The context is
that the governor looked at Enugu as an economic hub where tourism and the
hospitality sector could be aligned.”
He commended Tinubu, who, according to him, has had the courage to support ideas that catalyse the economy of the south-east region.
“So, without the vision of the president, without his clear
support for the government of Enugu state and the southeast, the whole process
would have continued to be on the drawing table like it was in past
administrations,” the SSG said.
“So the president played a pivotal role in ensuring that he
gave the right direction and authorisation to the people heading the different
agencies, from the honourable minister of aviation, who has been a big
supporter of this government and of this idea, to be able to push the other
agencies under him that report to him to go through the process and ensure
that, yes, due process is achieved.”
