Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has commended the House of Representatives for passing the State Police Bill, describing it as a bold step toward strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.
In his Democracy Day broadcast on Friday, Governor Alia said the legislation recognizes the need for a localized and responsive policing system capable of tackling the unique security challenges faced by different states and communities.
“The lawmakers deserve appreciation for demonstrating courage, foresight, and commitment to the protection of lives and property,” Alia stated.
He urged Nigerians to embrace the reform in good faith, noting that with proper safeguards and accountability, state police can complement existing agencies, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure quicker responses to threats.
According to his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Alia highlighted his administration’s ongoing efforts to enhance security in Benue, including the provision of over 150 operational vehicles and 600 motorcycles, the establishment of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards, and the Anyam Nyor Joint Task Force.
These measures, he said, have contributed to restoring peace in several parts of the state.
“This is a significant milestone in our collective quest for a safer and more secure Nigeria,” the governor added.
