Gombe Governor: Strong Local Governments Key to Security, Democracy

Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State has emphasized that effective local government administration is central to tackling insecurity, deepening democracy, and driving rural development.

He made this statement while swearing in newly elected chairpersons of the state’s 11 Local Government Areas and 13 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

Speaking at the Government House, Yahaya urged the new leaders to prioritize transparency, grassroots security, and service delivery.

He described the June 27 local government elections as peaceful and credible, noting that the outcome reaffirmed public confidence in the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“As we gradually approach 2027, let your performance become the strongest campaign for our party. Let the people see, feel and experience the dividends of democracy in every ward, district and community,” Yahaya said.

The governor highlighted the importance of local governments in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, citing their proximity to the people and role in fostering community engagement and intelligence gathering.

He defended the creation of 13 LCDAs, stressing that the reform was designed to bring governance closer to citizens, not expand bureaucracy.

Modern headquarters have already been built, personnel harmonized, and administrative processes completed for their smooth take-off.Yahaya also pointed to a financial turnaround in local councils since he assumed office in 2019.

He recalled that many councils previously struggled to pay salaries and deliver services, but said prudent financial management has made them more stable and resilient.

He praised the Joint Projects Development Agency as a successful model of collaboration between state and local governments in delivering infrastructure, healthcare, education, water supply, and agricultural projects.

Urging the new chairpersons to govern with integrity, Yahaya warned against placing personal interests above public service.

He acknowledged persistent challenges in rural communities, including insecurity, poor infrastructure, unemployment, and limited economic opportunities, insisting that stronger local governments remain key to addressing them.

Responding on behalf of the new leaders, Abdullahi Bappa, Chairman of Gombe Local Government Area, thanked the governor and pledged not to disappoint the people.
