The Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development (SCDDD), founded by former presidential Chief of Staff Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, has inaugurated a reconstituted Council of the Wise to promote peace and credibility ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The council, chaired by retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, was unveiled on Tuesday in Abuja.
Gambari, who also serves as chairman of the centre, charged members to engage political leaders, security agencies, religious figures, and traditional rulers to prevent electoral violence and foster national unity.
“The purpose of establishing the Council of the Wise is to tap from the individual and collective knowledge, rich experience and wisdom of the members to facilitate a peaceful, credible, free and fair election,” Gambari said during the inauguration.
The council includes respected figures such as Prof Shuaibu Oba Abdulraheem, actress Joke Silva, Amb. Godknows Igali, Prof Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, Prof Abdullahi Shehu Yibaikwal, Tunji Lardner, Amb. Abdulaziz Dankano, Amb. Ummu Kalthum Muhammad, Malam Abdullahi Aliyu Usman, and Amb. Sani Saulawa Bala.
Responding on behalf of the members, Ariwoola pledged the council’s commitment to strengthening democracy and ensuring a credible leadership selection process.
“Every one of us owes it a duty as Nigerians to work for the peace, unity and prosperity of our country, irrespective of faith, tribe or political leaning,” he said.
The SCDDD, established in 1993, has long been a platform for research, advocacy, and conflict resolution.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the council is expected to consult widely with stakeholders including President Bola Tinubu, opposition leaders, INEC, and civil society groups to build trust and safeguard Nigeria’s democratic process.
