Former Ondo Lawmaker Sues IGP Over Alleged Arrest Before APC Primary

A former member of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr. Ayodeji Arowele, has filed a lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force, challenging what he described as his unlawful arrest ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primary election held last month.

Arowele, who vied for the Owo/Ose Federal Constituency ticket, claimed he was arrested on May 16, 2026, just hours before the primary began. He argued that the action violated his fundamental rights under the 1999 Constitution. Through his counsel, Chief Kunle Ijalana, the two-term lawmaker is seeking ₦50 million in damages and a declaration that the police invasion of his hotel room was unconstitutional.

The suit lists the IGP, the Nigeria Police Force, ASP Ebito Ephraim, CSP Hilary Mazi, and Mr. Yusuf Sanya Isiaka as respondents. Arowele also asked the court to restrain the police from further arresting or threatening him, insisting that repeated invitations over the same allegation amount to abuse of power and double jeopardy.

In a petition accompanying the suit, Arowele alleged that about 30 officers stormed his hotel in Owo without a warrant, assaulted him and his security aides, and whisked him away. He was later released on bail after six hours at the Zone 17 Police Command in Akure, but directed to report to Abuja after the primary.

The former lawmaker maintained that the arrest disrupted his participation in the APC primary, where he was one of the aspirants for the 2027 general elections.
