Adeyinka Alaseyori, the gospel singer, has apologised to
Nigerians following backlash over her recent statements about the country’s
ongoing security challenges.
In her initial remarks, the singer encouraged citizens to
turn to prayer instead of directing their anger at President Bola Tinubu over
the rising insecurity.
She described prayer as a powerful spiritual tool and pushed
against a growing public sentiment that intercession no longer brings solutions
to the nation’s problems.
“Prayers are working. Don’t let anybody tell you prayers are
not working. From the president to the last person in this country, we need to
pray. Every parastatal, every sector, we all need prayers,” she had said.
“You can’t say the president or vice president is not
working. The security personnel might have gone to rescue them, and a charm
could have covered their face so they would not see anything. That is the place
of prayer.”
Her comments triggered strong criticism across social media
platforms. Many users accused her of being disconnected from the realities of
ordinary Nigerians, with some even suggesting that she had received financial
favors from the government.
In response, Alaseyori went on Instagram to clarify her
position. She stated that her words had been taken out of context.
The singer explained that the widely shared clip was just a
small portion of a longer, nearly 90-minute prayer session.
That session, she said, was dedicated to victims of
insecurity, government officials, and the entire nation.
She said she never intended to dismiss or overlook the pain
of grieving families affected by the crisis. She also offered a special prayer
for all mothers.
“I did a video two days ago, about one hour thirty minutes
praying for the kidnapped children, their families, the government parastatals,
the military, three arms of government, Nigerian land and everybody in pain as
a whole,” she said.
“But when I woke up yesterday, I discovered that some
well-meaning Nigerians were feeling offended because I made them feel unseen or
their voices unheard.
“You know me too well that I would never make anyone feel
like that. I discovered that the video was cut from a one hour thirty minutes
video.
“All mothers, please do not be angry with me. I beg you in
Jesus name, you will not bury any of your children.
“Please forgive me if I ever made you feel offended, unseen
or I spoke as if I was insensitive. I am a mother too and in Jesus name, all
mothers would reap the fruits of the labour.”
