The Federal Government has pledged to strengthen collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to better safeguard and support Nigerian students studying overseas.
This commitment was made during a strategic meeting between officials of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a NANS delegation led by the association’s Director of Diaspora and International Students Affairs, Daniel Oyeniyi.
According to a statement issued by Oyeniyi on Monday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs was represented at the meeting by the ministry’s Assistant Director (OHMS), Mrs. Ezinne Osigwe.
Oyeniyi highlighted concerns over the existing disconnect between the ministry and Nigerian students in the diaspora, noting that many students abroad lack adequate institutional support.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment of Nigerian students overseas and the insufficient provisions for their overall welfare.
NANS proposed collaboration in several key areas, including:
Student welfare and protection
Enhanced consular services
Student data and engagement
Policy advocacy
Career and professional development
Crisis management framework
Academic and international partnerships
Reintegration and nation-building
Regular dialogue and representation
In response, Osigwe apologised for the Minister’s absence and assured NANS of the ministry’s readiness to partner with the student body to address the challenges faced by Nigerian students abroad.
She explained that past disconnects were not deliberate but stemmed from a lack of sustained engagement, and affirmed that the ministry has embraced NANS’ proposed areas of collaboration.
Oyeniyi described the meeting as a significant step forward and pledged to continue advocating for Nigerian students in the diaspora.
He expressed optimism that the new partnership would ease many of the difficulties faced by students studying overseas and make international education more rewarding.
