FCT Police Enforce Tinted Glass Ban, Seize Over 30 Cars

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has impounded more than 30 vehicles in Abuja for violating traffic regulations, including the use of tinted glasses, obscured number plates, and improper registration.

Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi told journalists on Friday that the enforcement drive was launched to curb the use of such vehicles by criminals engaged in one-chance robberies, kidnappings, and other violent crimes.

Sanusi explained that intelligence reports revealed criminal elements deliberately exploit tinted windows and concealed plates to evade detection.

Acting on the directive of Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, the command has now intensified enforcement of the ban.

“This exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens, but to deny criminals the cover they exploit to commit crimes against innocent residents,” Sanusi said.

He confirmed that owners of the impounded vehicles would be prosecuted under the FCT Road Transport Regulations Act, 2023.

The crackdown comes amid lingering uncertainty over the Nigeria Police Force’s tinted glass permit policy, which was suspended nationwide in January 2026 following a court order.

It remains unclear whether the suspension has since been lifted.Sanusi urged residents to support the operation, remain vigilant, and report suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station.

He emphasized that the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen security and prevent crime in the nation’s capital.
