Don’t Japa, Tinubu Urges Youths to Stay, Build Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu on Friday made a direct appeal to Nigerian youths, urging them to remain in the country and contribute to its development instead of emigrating in search of greener pastures.

In his Democracy Day address, Tinubu told young Nigerians: “Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here.

"Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship.”

The President’s message comes amid the ongoing “Japa” trend, where many skilled young Nigerians, especially in technology, healthcare, and academia, continue to leave the country for better economic opportunities abroad.

Tinubu emphasised that democracy must deliver tangible economic benefits, particularly to the youth.

He highlighted several government initiatives aimed at creating opportunities, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, the deployment of 10,000 tractors by the National Agricultural Development Fund over five years, and the certification of over 1,000 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for export.

He further stressed the historical responsibility of the current generation, saying: “Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence. The generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity.”

The appeal forms part of Tinubu’s broader Democracy Day speech, which also touched on security, national unity, and ongoing reforms.
