Activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has called on the federal government to extend its demolition policy beyond kidnappers’ hideouts to the lavish properties of politicians and public officials accused of looting public funds.
In a statement posted on his X handle on Tuesday, Sowore argued that treasury looting is a form of kidnapping that robs millions of Nigerians of healthcare, education, jobs, infrastructure, and their future.
“There is no reason why the demolition of houses should be limited only to kidnappers. Public treasury looting is a form of kidnapping too it kidnaps healthcare, education, jobs, infrastructure, and the future of millions of Nigerians,” he said.
Sowore insisted that if the government believes property linked to crime should be destroyed, the same principle must apply to corrupt officials.
He added that mansions and assets acquired through stolen public funds should face demolition as a deterrent.
His remarks followed the Oyo State Government’s demolition of a building in Ibadan allegedly used as a hideout by kidnappers who abducted Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, sister of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, along with her twin sons.
The structure was pulled down less than 48 hours after the victims were rescued. The state government described the action as part of its zero-tolerance stance against criminality.
Sowore, however, urged authorities to apply the same zero-tolerance approach to corruption, which he described as equally destructive to national development.
