A heated exchange has erupted between the Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) and Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, over criticisms directed at Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration.
During a press conference in Benin City on June 11, Afegbua accused CRPP of spreading falsehoods, particularly regarding the Children’s Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, where several students collapsed amid a stampede.
He insisted that only 17 children were affected by teargas fired by private security personnel, contrary to CRPP’s claim of 50.
"All the 17 children were promptly treated, with 15 discharged the same day and the remaining two the next,” Afegbua stated, dismissing CRPP’s allegations as baseless.
In response, CRPP leaders Dr. Samson Isibor and Nka Waribe condemned Afegbua’s remarks, describing him as a “jester commissioner” more focused on defending the government than addressing pressing issues.
They accused him of abandoning civility and of attempting to intimidate opposition voices.
The coalition maintained that its criticisms are aimed at holding Governor Okpebholo accountable on matters of security, employment, and food production.
It further called for Afegbua’s removal, arguing that he has failed to positively project the government’s image.
CRPP urged the commissioner to emulate his predecessor, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, whom they praised as a diplomatic and effective communicator.
