The Nigerian Youth Organisation (NYO), a coalition of youth groups, has called on President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to caution Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru over alleged threats directed at opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, NYO Deputy National President, Comrade Nasir Doka, warned that Governor Nwifuru’s “inflammatory rhetoric” against political actors, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-East, poses a danger to democratic engagement.
Doka stressed that public office holders must recognise the weight of their words, noting that the governor’s comments have raised concerns among Nigerians, especially young people, who view such language as intimidating and inconsistent with democratic values.
“Democracy is sustained by tolerance, dissent, criticism, and competition of ideas. No democracy can thrive where opposition voices fear intimidation,” the NYO stated.
The coalition emphasized that constitutional rights such as freedom of expression, association, and political participation are not privileges granted by government officials but fundamental entitlements of every Nigerian citizen.
It urged stakeholders to remain vigilant against rhetoric that could undermine Nigeria’s democracy, calling on Governor Nwifuru to publicly reaffirm his commitment to political tolerance and constitutional freedoms.
The NYO also appealed to security agencies to ensure political rhetoric is not misinterpreted as a licence for intimidation or violence, while encouraging political parties and leaders nationwide to embrace responsible communication.
Finally, the group urged Ebonyi youths to remain calm, restrained, and committed to peace as the nation approaches the 2027 elections.
