The National Assembly complex was thrown into chaos on Wednesday when a fire erupted in the Senate wing shortly after a high-profile screening exercise.
The incident occurred at Hearing Room 107, just minutes after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, a nominee to represent the North-East on the commission’s board.
Eyewitness video footage captured National Assembly staff swiftly responding with fire extinguishers to bring the blaze under control. No injuries or casualties were reported as of the time of filing.
According to reports, the fire is believed to have been caused by a microwave left switched on in a nearby kitchen area.
In the aftermath, committee officials reportedly instructed journalists covering the proceedings to delete photographs and video recordings of the incident.
The quick intervention by staff prevented what could have been a more serious situation in one of Nigeria’s key democratic institutions. Further investigations are expected to determine the exact cause and assess any potential damage.
