The Borno State Government has reintegrated 3,762 former insurgents and their family members under its peace-building initiative known as the “Borno Model.”
The group, classified as Batch 9 low-risk and minor clients, includes 720 men, 992 spouses, and 2,050 children who voluntarily surrendered.
They were formally released at the Hajj Camp in Maiduguri after completing deradicalisation, disarmament, rehabilitation, and vocational training programmes.
Special Adviser on Security to Governor Babagana Zulum, retired Brigadier General Abdullahi Ishaq, said the programme is a cornerstone of the state’s non-kinetic approach to tackling insurgency.
Beneficiaries underwent religious education, counselling, hygiene and drug awareness sessions, alongside vocational training in tailoring, carpentry, metalwork, phone repairs, solar installation, and other trades.
Female participants received training in soap making, knitting, catering, and tailoring, with starter packs provided to aid their reintegration.
Since its launch in July 2021, the initiative has reintegrated more than 9,600 people across local government areas including Bama, Gwoza, Damboa, Mafa, Dikwa, Marte, Monguno, and Kukawa.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, represented by Permanent Secretary Babagana Kadai, said the programme reflects government’s commitment to restoring peace, rebuilding lives, and fostering social cohesion.
Security officials, religious leaders, and community representatives urged the reintegrated beneficiaries to remain law-abiding and contribute positively to their communities.
Some participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
