Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has told the U.S. Congress that Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender, had considered blackmailing him over his extramarital affairs.
Testifying before the House Oversight Committee on June 10, Gates said Epstein made “veiled” threats and appeared to be rehearsing ways to exploit knowledge of Gates’s private life to keep him within his circle, even as Gates sought to distance himself.
“I was not blackmailed, but… it looks like Mr. Epstein’s brainstorming was going in that direction,” Gates said, referring to draft emails uncovered in documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice earlier this year.
He clarified that none of the messages were ever sent to him.Gates, 70, reiterated that he had never been aware of Epstein’s criminal activities and had “never victimized anyone.” He admitted earlier this year to having extramarital affairs with two Russian women, describing his association with Epstein as a “major mistake.”
Their relationship began in 2011, three years after Epstein’s conviction for prostitution charges involving minors.
Gates acknowledged knowing of Epstein’s legal troubles but said he had been told Epstein could raise billions for global health initiatives.
While Gates stressed that mere mention in Epstein’s files does not imply wrongdoing, the documents highlight connections between Epstein and prominent figures who often downplayed their ties to him.
