The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has directed native doctors, water goddess priestesses, and adherents of traditional deities including Osokpikan, Aiyelala, and Olokun to gather with their instruments on July 10 to place curses on kidnappers, armed robbers, and other criminal elements troubling Edo State.
The monarch issued the directive on Tuesday during a meeting with traditional spiritual leaders at his palace in Benin City.
He emphasized that the exercise was aimed at restoring peace and supporting government efforts to combat insecurity.
“Many things that are not supposed to be happening are happening in this state. We have to pray. Those who want to destroy the kingdom will not succeed,” Oba Ewuare II declared.
Speaking through the Akenuwa of Benin, Chief Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, the Oba urged the spiritual leaders to use their powers to drive away evil forces.
He instructed them to return to the palace after ten days to reinforce the curses on those involved in criminal acts.Chief Egboye affirmed the monarch’s directive, noting that similar traditional interventions had been effective in the past.
Princess Juliet Ehigiamusoe, the Ohen N’ Ogbeguma N’ Ayen, also pledged that adherents would mobilize resources from both land and water to carry out the order.
The palace stressed that the initiative was part of broader efforts to ensure peace and security across Edo State.
