The Bauchi State Police Command has kicked off a strict enforcement drive against motorists operating unregistered vehicles or using concealed, fictitious, or obscured number plates, deploying mobile courts for swift trials across the state.
The operation follows a directive from Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at improving road safety and bolstering overall security in Bauchi State.
In a statement released by Command Spokesman SP Nafiu Habib, the police announced a partnership with the state judiciary to set up mobile courts at the five Area Command headquarters and other key locations in Bauchi metropolis. These courts have already begun hearing cases involving vehicles without valid registration, those with covered or altered plates, and those bearing fake or unauthorised numbers.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu emphasised that unregistered and unidentifiable vehicles represent a major security risk, as they are often linked to serious crimes such as kidnapping and armed robbery. He clarified that the exercise is intended to protect lives and property, not to harass compliant motorists.
Offenders face vehicle impoundment and prosecution in the mobile courts, with penalties including fines and other sanctions under relevant motor vehicle laws and police regulations.
The Command urged vehicle owners and drivers to immediately regularise their documents, ensure number plates are clearly displayed, and avoid any tampering, covering, or defacing of registration numbers. Residents have also been called upon to support officers during the operation, which the police say will continue without compromise to curb criminal activities facilitated by untraceable vehicles.
