Oladimeji Fabiyi, an ally of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has accused former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, of masterminding religious crises in Northern Nigeria.
Fabiyi made the allegation during a Wednesday interview on Trust TV, while responding to Lawal’s recent criticisms of Atiku.Lawal, who recently announced his exit from the ADC, had claimed that the party’s presidential primary was rigged in Atiku’s favour and declared that the former Vice President is unfit to lead the country. In a strong rebuttal, Fabiyi questioned Lawal’s integrity and character as a leader and elder statesman from Adamawa State.
“Babachir Lawal lacks integrity. He is a leader and elder in Adamawa State and in the North, but sincerely speaking, he’s not acting like one,” Fabiyi said.
He urged Nigerians to examine Lawal’s past, stating: “Today, I’m going to take you back memory lane... In the 1980s, the likes of Babachir Lawal orchestrated one of the most heinous religious crises in the north.”
Fabiyi challenged Lawal to dispute the claims publicly if they were false. He also criticised Lawal for recently accusing Atiku of being a Fulani man, questioning why Lawal had joined Atiku’s political coalition earlier if he held such views.
The accusations add to the growing tensions and public disagreements within Nigeria’s opposition political circles ahead of future elections.
