Atiku Rebukes Babachir Lawal Over Ethnic Profiling, Conspiracy Claims

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has strongly criticized ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, accusing him of fueling ethnic prejudice and spreading conspiracy theories that threaten Nigeria’s unity.

In a statement by his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described Lawal’s recent remarks as inflammatory and lacking evidence, warning that attempts to stigmatize entire ethnic groups based on the actions of a few individuals could deepen divisions in a country already battling insecurity and economic hardship.

“It is both dangerous and irresponsible to suggest that any Nigerian should be judged or condemned for crimes committed by individuals simply because they share a common ancestry,” Atiku said, stressing that such rhetoric undermines national cohesion.

He further highlighted contradictions in Lawal’s public posture, noting that while Lawal portrays himself as a victim of political conspiracies, he simultaneously claims to be courted by governors eager for his return to the All Progressives Congress.

Atiku also defended his record of solidarity with victims of violence, citing his visit to Kagoro in Southern Kaduna and his support for Chibok schoolgirls through scholarships at the American University of Nigeria, Yola.

He emphasized that leadership must transcend ethnic and religious divides, focusing instead on healing and nation-building.Rejecting Lawal’s attacks, Atiku urged Nigerians to resist politics of bitterness and division, declaring:

“Babachir may see tribe. I see Nigerians. Babachir may see division. I see a nation that must come together if it is to overcome its present challenges.”
