Argentine television presenter Florencia Peña has resigned from her position at Luzu TV following a major on-air error in which she wrongly announced the death of Jorge Messi, father of football superstar Lionel Messi.
The incident occurred during the programme “El Show del Verano” on Luzu TV. Peña was reportedly given the false information through her earpiece by the production team and relayed it live without verification.
The erroneous report spread rapidly before being debunked by the Messi family, who confirmed that Jorge Messi is alive and recovering from a health issue.
Luzu TV swiftly condemned the lapse, describing the broadcast of unverified sensitive information as “inacceptable.” The station stated it had dismissed those responsible for the error, while Peña chose to resign.
In an emotional public apology, Peña expressed deep shame for the pain caused to the Messi family. She revealed that she personally contacted Lionel Messi’s mother, Celia Cuccittini.
The presenter later appeared visibly distraught on another programme, explaining the circumstances that led to her resignation.
The blunder triggered strong reactions in Argentina, including sharp criticism from President Javier Milei, who described the incident as an attack on a national icon.
Peña’s resignation marks the conclusion of what has been widely described as a career-damaging mistake, though her prompt apology has been noted by some as a responsible step.
