Akpabio Swears In Four New Senators After By-Elections


Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday administered the oath of office to four newly elected senators who emerged victorious in the recent by-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). 


The new lawmakers are:  

Olaka Nwogu (PDP, Rivers South-East)  

Envulu Anza (APC, Nasarawa North)  

Ikeje Asogwu (APC, Enugu North)  

Dayo Faduyile (APC, Ondo South)


Their swearing-in followed by-elections held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, to fill vacancies in the respective senatorial districts. INEC had presented certificates of return to the winners on Tuesday. 


The vacancies arose due to:  

The death of Senator Barinada Mpigi (Rivers South-East)  

The death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki (Nasarawa North)  

The death of Senator Okechukwu Ezea (Enugu North)  

The appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (Ondo South)


During the plenary session, the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, administered the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office to the four senators.In his remarks, Akpabio congratulated the new senators and welcomed them to the “Red Chamber,” describing the Senate as “a family of the most elite club in the world.” He urged them to place national interest above partisan considerations and to thoroughly acquaint themselves with the 1999 Constitution and the Senate Standing Orders (as amended in 2023). 


Dignitaries at the ceremony included Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo. 


This brings the current composition of the 10th Senate to full strength following the recent vacancies.
