Senate President Godswill Akpabio has hinted at efforts to secure favourable outcomes for serving senators affected by recent party primaries.
Akpabio spoke on Tuesday while welcoming lawmakers back from
the three-week recess and Eid-el-Kabir break.
The senate president congratulated political parties that
recently concluded their primaries and candidates who secured tickets for the
next round of elections.
“I know that there will always be victories and disappointments,” he said.
Akpabio, however, suggested that efforts were ongoing to
reduce the political fallout from the primary season for senators.
“And in this senate, we are promised that we will have very
few disappointments. And I do know that the senate leader and the leadership of
the senate is working very hard towards that,” he said.
The remark comes amid growing anxiety among some lawmakers
who lost party tickets or are embroiled in disputes arising from the recently
concluded primaries.
Fourteen serving senators were defeated during the All
Progressives Congress (APC) primaries across different states.
On May 26, Ned Nwoko, senator representing Delta North,
alleged that party leaders, including Abdullahi Ganduje, former APC national
chairman, assured him of an automatic ticket before he defected to the ruling
party.
Akpabio did not elaborate on the nature of the efforts being
made by the Senate leadership.
The Senate president jokingly cautioned senators against
joining another political party.
Already, several lawmakers who lost out in the primary
process have left the ruling party.
They include Shehu Buba, senator representing Bauchi south
and Garba Maidoki, senator representing Kebbi south.
Akpabio, however, framed the developments as part of the
democratic process.
He said while some aspirants emerged victorious and others
suffered setbacks, democracy remained the ultimate winner.
FOCUS SHIFTS TO SECURITY
Beyond politics, the senate president expressed concern over
the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo state.
He described the incident as “an assault on our collective
humanity”.
Akpabio also warned politicians against exploiting national
tragedies for partisan advantage.
“At moments such as these, there is a temptation to divide,
to accuse, and to seek advantage from tragedy. Politicians and aspirants must
resist that temptation for such cheap publicity,” he said.
He urged lawmakers to support measures aimed at strengthening security and safeguarding schools and communities across the country.
“Let us continue to support every lawful and necessary
measure to strengthen security, protect our schools, safeguard our communities,
and ensure that every bandit faces the full weight of justice,” he said.
