Afenifere Warns Against Yielding to Oyo Terrorists’ Demands

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has strongly cautioned authorities against meeting any demands from the terrorists who abducted students and teachers in Oyo State.

The attack took place on May 15 when gunmen invaded schools in Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota, and Alawusa communities in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting at least 39 pupils and seven teachers.

The kidnappers initially made several demands, including the release of detained terrorist commanders, ransom payments, two Hilux vehicles, and the imposition of Sharia-related laws.

A captive teacher later clarified in a viral video that their main demand was the release of specific Ansaru commanders.

Those named include Mahmud Usman (aka Abu Bara’a or Abbas Mukhtar) and his deputy Abubakar Abba (aka Isah Adam or Mahmud Al-Nigeri), senior members of the Boko Haram splinter group Ansaru arrested by the DSS in 2025.

Recent indications suggest the abductors have shifted focus primarily to collecting ransom from victims’ families.

In an interview with Daily Post, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, rejected any form of concession.

He argued that paying ransoms or accepting terrorists’ demands would encourage more abductions, reward criminality, and erode public confidence in government.

Ajayi stressed that such actions only empower criminals and further destabilise society. He called for strict enforcement of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022, which prohibits ransom payments, and urged decisive action against terrorism sponsors.

On the security front, troops have surrounded a suspected hideout in the National Park forest area where the hostages are believed to be held, with hopes rising for their imminent rescue.
