The All Democratic Alliance (ADA) has rejected Monday’s judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to release the party registration access code to the Chief Akin Ricketts-led faction.
In a statement on Tuesday, ADA described the ruling as an attempt to impose “outsider leadership” on the association, insisting that Ricketts and his allies had long defected to the African Democratic Congress and no longer had authority to act on its behalf.
National Publicity Secretary, Leye Igbabo, clarified that the court did not order INEC to register ADA as a political party but only to release the access code to Ricketts to recommence the registration process.
He stressed that the leadership change had already been formally communicated to INEC, which acknowledged the Prince Uche Secondus- and Dr Umar Ardo-led National Executive Committee as the legitimate leadership.
“The judgment, if implemented, would impose outsider leadership on the association and reopen a concluded registration process. It is not only an abuse of process but also vexatious and obnoxious,” the statement read.
ADA confirmed that its lawyers had filed a stay of execution and a notice of appeal, expressing confidence that the Court of Appeal would overturn the ruling.
The development follows Justice Peter Lifu’s order directing INEC to generate and release the access code to Ricketts within 72 hours and reopen its registration portal for one week.
The court also nullified all documents submitted by Ardo, ruling that he was neither the recognised Protem National Chairman nor Protem Secretary of the association.
The case stems from a dispute between factions of ADA, with the Ricketts-led group accusing INEC of recognising Ardo and denying them the access code required to complete the party’s registration under the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines.
