2027: PDP Can Best Deliver Tinubu’s Agenda in Lagos - Doherty

Adedeji Doherty, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2027 Lagos State governorship election, has asserted that his party is best placed to effectively implement President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, June 25, 2026, Doherty emphasised that Lagos, as the country’s economic and financial hub with an estimated 20-25 million residents and about 13 million registered voters, plays a pivotal role in translating federal policies into widespread impact.

He argued that despite generating substantial revenue, around N3.3 trillion annually, comparable to several West African economies combined  the current administration in Lagos has not delivered commensurate improvements in key sectors such as education, healthcare, power, transportation, security, and infrastructure.“Lagos State is the boiling point and also the economic hub of Nigeria,” Doherty stated.

He noted that President Tinubu’s initiatives, including fuel subsidy removal, power sector reforms (Band A and B), and youth empowerment programmes, require strong state-level buy-in to succeed, particularly in Lagos.

Doherty, a businessman and entrepreneur with experience in setting up and managing companies, highlighted persistent challenges including the lack of new general hospitals in over 25 years, inadequate road networks, ongoing traffic congestion despite rail projects, and over-taxation of businesses.

He unveiled a 10-point agenda focusing on roads, education, healthcare, housing, security, power, water supply, and empowerment of youths, women, and children. A key proposal is for the state to subsidise power and invest directly in electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) to ensure affordable, reliable 24-hour electricity for small businesses like hairdressers, tailors, welders, and vulcanisers.

On security, Doherty pledged to deploy drones and other resources beyond Lagos borders if necessary, citing threats from neighbouring states like Oyo, Ondo, and the Niger Delta as risks to Lagos’ stability. The PDP chieftain and South-West National Vice Chairman positioned his candidacy as one rooted in proven capacity, promising a fair contest and a focus on youth and environmental issues to complement federal efforts.

He stressed that without reciprocal support from Lagos in areas like agriculture, indigenous business growth, and reduced over-taxation, federal programmes would struggle to reach the grassroots.
