A group of influential All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains in Yobe State has rejected the endorsement of former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
The stakeholders, drawn from the three senatorial zones of the state, made their position known during a gathering in Potiskum on Sunday.
They declared full support for Senator Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai instead and vowed to resist any imposition of candidates.
Speaking at the event, one of the leaders, Yusuf Zaki, criticised the process that led to Wali’s endorsement, saying it lacked broad consultation and did not reflect the wishes of the majority of party members at the grassroots.
“We did not agree with the endorsement, and we will never accept it. Nobody, whoever he thinks he is, can impose a candidate on us,” Zaki said.
He specifically noted that even prominent figures like Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam could not unilaterally decide for the entire party.
Other chieftains, including Ibrahim Ibbiyo and Idi Jugujugu, echoed the rejection, describing the process as lacking transparency and fairness.
They demanded a level playing field where aspirants could test their popularity through a credible primary.
The gathering, which attracted thousands of supporters carrying placards in support of Bomai, signalled possible collaboration among some governorship aspirants, including Kashim Musa Tumsah.
Wali’s endorsement had earlier been announced by Governor Mai Mala Buni, Gaidam, and other critical stakeholders after a meeting where he was described as a seasoned technocrat capable of providing effective leadership.
This latest development highlights growing divisions within the Yobe APC over the adoption of consensus candidates ahead of the 2027 polls, with several aspirants insisting on open, democratic primaries.
