A man identifying himself as Newton Isokpehi, a serving Nigerian police officer with 26 years of experience, has sparked widespread outrage after a video surfaced in which he threatens to shoot and kill anyone who records him while on duty.
In the viral clip, which circulated widely on social media on Wednesday, Isokpehi issues graphic warnings directed at members of the public and any superior officers he accuses of encouraging citizens to film police personnel. He speaks primarily in Pidgin English.
Key excerpts from his statements (translated):“Any day I’m on duty as a police officer, carrying my rifle and doing my job, let somebody come and video me. That oga who gave you people the order to video us, he will go and do your burial... The number of you that I kill, he will be the one to bury all of you.”
“If anyone is bold enough, just bring your camera... Come and video me. If you don’t do it right, I will clear everybody down, the whole bus, everybody around. I swear to God, if I don’t do it, let me die.”
He also lashes out at any officer allegedly ordering the filming of police: “That oga... who gave the order for people to video policemen on duty, oya, I will deal with you all harshly. You will see serious wahala... Problem will destroy your generation.”
During the video, Isokpehi points to scars on his arm, claiming they are bullet wounds from years of service, and complains about poor welfare for officers despite the hardships they endure. He notes that the current Inspector-General of Police has started releasing long-overdue insurance and death benefits to affected families.
The video, which features an ironic “God bless police” overlay, was originally posted on Isokpehi’s TikTok account (@actor459, “Newton isokpehi for life”), where he has shared other content in police uniform. It has since been deleted, though the account remains active.
