Gunmen suspected to be cultists shot a yet-to-be-identified student and killed a middle-aged man at the University of Benin main gate on Sunday.
According to Uniben gist, a blog relaying happenings within
and outside the university, the man was murdered at the university’s campus in
Ugbowo, Benin City.
Videos of the incident seemingly showed the
victim in a GLK Mercedes mini wagon with registration number AAA 601 HT, Lagos.
Eyewitnesses said the car was pursued by the assailants, who
overtook the driver and had his vehicle as well as his body riddled with
bullets.
Passersby identified the victim as a part-time student of
the department of political science who recently completed his semester
examinations.
Confirming the attack in a statement, the national
association of Biochemistry students at the university admitted that one of the
university’s students was shot and immediately rushed to the hospital.
The statement did not disclose the identity of the affected
student.
“We can confirm that a 400-level Biochemistry student was
caught in the crossfire during the encounter. A bullet pierced her shoulder and
rib. She has suffered significant blood loss, but she’s stable now,” the
statement reads.
A statement on Sunday by Benedicta Ehanire, the university’s
public relations officer, said the University of Benin dissociates its staff
and students from the shooting.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the said incident is a
fallout of cult activities outside the Campus and does not involve any
university staff or students,” the statement reads.
“Management of the University, while expressing regrets over
the loss of life, urges members of the University community to remain vigilant
and to go about their academic activities on campus peacefully.”
Eno Ikoedem, spokesperson of the Edo state police command,
could not be reached as her phone was switched off.
