The United States is expected to set up a quarantine facility in Kenya to cater to Americans exposed to the Ebola virus following its outbreak in the region.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the Wall Street
Journal (WSJ) reported that the Donald Trump administration would potentially
deploy US public health officers to staff the quarantine facility.
Some members of the US public health service commissioned
corps, a uniformed branch under the department of health and human services
(HHS), have received notices to deploy, the report noted.
The WSJ sources said the facility is primarily intended for
Americans who are exposed to or at high risk of testing positive for the virus
in the region, as well as Americans who test positive.
There have been a few recorded cases of Americans
contracting the virus, including an American doctor in Germany.
Six other Americans exposed to the Ebola variant have also
since been transported to Germany and the Czech Republic for monitoring.
As at Tuesday, the deal was pending approval from the Kenyan
government.
Currently, Kenya has not recorded any cases of the virus
since its outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which is situated
in Central Africa, and subsequent spread to the East African countries of
Uganda and South Sudan.
There are also no approved vaccines or therapeutics
specifically targeting the Ebola Bundibugyo virus.
Last week, the US banned non-citizens travelling from the
DRC, South Sudan or Uganda to contain the spread of Ebola from the countries.
The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said
it is also supporting interagency partners who are actively coordinating the
safe withdrawal of a small number of Americans directly affected by the
outbreak.
