The University of Cross River State, UNICROSS, has accused former special adviser on education to ex-Governor Ben Ayade, Mr Castro Ezama, of having incited Monday’s violent student protest in Calabar.
Hundreds of UNICROSS students violently attacked general hospital Calabar over alleged poor medical and welfare attention to six of their colleagues who survived an auto accident on Calabar-Itu federal highway last weekend where four students died.
The school alleged that Ezama incited groups of staff and students through his social media posts against the university, sowing seeds of disharmony and negative propaganda aimed at creating disaffection between the students and staff.
In a letter dated 5th May 2026 and signed by Dr. Catherine Ndifon Osal, Registrar & Secretary to the University Council, and addressed to Ezama, a former students’ leader in the school, the governing council threatened to withdraw the degree they awarded him in the belief that he was worthy in character and learning.
“For the avoidance of doubt, you are reminded that every certificate issued by the University of Cross River State is awarded on the twin pillars of character and learning. These two elements are inseparable, the degree conferred on you remains an attestation that you possessed both at the time of graduation.
“The University therefore reserves the right, to withdraw any certificate previously awarded if the holder’s subsequent conduct demonstrates a clear departure from the standard of character expected of its graduates. This power is exercised to protect the integrity of the University’s qualifications and the reputation of the institution.
“You have made several Facebook posts and videos in which you encouraged staff and students to disregard the University’s laid down procedures and to confront the University Management in a manner contrary to established grievance redress channels.”
The school said Ezama’s alleged action was detrimental to peace, order and harmonious atmosphere required for teaching, learning, and administrative function in the university.
The school has ordered Ezama not only to pull down all inciting social media posts on the issue but stop further engagement of the nature with their staff and students.
They ordered him to publish a formal apology to the Vice Chancellor on the same social media pages, clearly acknowledging the alleged inappropriateness of such posts.
The school warned Ezama to comply within seven days of receipt of their letter else they will proceed with further actions against him.
