The United Kingdom has raised its terrorism threat level from “substantial” to “severe” following an antisemitic attack in the country.
A “severe” threat level means a terrorist attack is highly
likely to occur in the UK.
According to a statement by the UK government, the increase
follows the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green, north London, on
Wednesday.
The terror threat level was set by the Joint Terrorism
Analysis Centre (JTAC) on Thursday.
Dan Jarvis, UK security minister, said the decision was “not
solely as a result of that attack”, but had also been “driven by an increase in
broader Islamist and extreme right-wing” threats.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police has declared the
stabbings a terrorist incident, describing it as part of a string of attacks
targeting the UK Jewish community.
Jarvis urged the public to remain calm, saying they should
be “alert and vigilant” but not “alarmed”.
He added that intelligence agencies, police and the
government are “working round the clock to keep the public safe”.
Shabana Mahmood, UK home secretary, said the development
“will be a source of concern to many, particularly amongst our Jewish
community, who have suffered so much”.
She said the government will do everything in its power to
rid society of the evil of antisemitism, noting earlier plans to increase
funding for security at Jewish sites.
“As the threat level rises, I urge everyone to be vigilant,
as they go about their daily lives, and report any concerns they have to the
police,” Mahmood said.
There has been an increase in racist and antisemitic hate
crime in the country in recent times.
According to the BBC, two jews were killed and three others
seriously injured in a car-ramming and stabbing attack outside a synagogue in
Manchester In October 2025. One of the victims was shot dead by police.
In March, four Hatzola ambulances owned by a Jewish charity
were set on fire in a synagogue car park in Golders Green.
More recently, the Finchley Reform Synagogue in north London
was attacked, while a bottle containing an accelerant was thrown through the
window of Kenton United Synagogue days later.
The UK was last at a “severe” threat level in November 2021,
following a bomb explosion outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital and the killing
of MP David Amess. It was lowered to “substantial” in February 2022.
