Troops of the Nigerian Army have repelled an attack by suspected terrorists near the Ogbeese forest and Owo axis in Akure North LGA of Ondo State.
The soldiers also reportedly recovered weapons and other
items during the operation.
Sources
told Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, that the
incident happened around 7:30pm on May 4 after troops received a distress call
on the movement of suspected terrorists in the area.
“The troops reportedly mobilised to the general area, made
contact and engaged the attackers in a firefight, forcing them to flee,” Makama
said.
“Following a further exploitation of the area, troops
recovered one Dane gun and one mobile phone belonging to the suspects.
“However, during the encounter, one soldier was killed in
action while another sustained injuries.”
The publication said the injured soldier was taken to the
Federal Medical Centre in Owo where he is receiving treatment.
Makama, quoting military authorities, said troops have
increased patrols and security operations in the vicinity to prevent criminals
from infiltrating the area.
“They assured residents of continued efforts to sustain
security and dominance of the general area,” Makama said.
