Troops under Operation Hadin Kai killed a suspected JAS/ISWAP spy during a night patrol along the Banki border perimeter fence in Borno state.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency
publication, that the incident occurred when troops noticed suspicious movement
from the Cameroonian border route leading into Banki town.
The publication reported that the suspect was seen crossing
the border fence from Cameroon into Banki town in what appeared to be an
attempt to monitor the movement of troops.
“The troops reportedly engaged the suspect, who was
neutralised during the operation,” Makama said.
“The sources added that following the incident, troops
conducted a sweeping operation of the general area in search of other suspected
terrorists, but no further contact was made.
“Security officials said monitoring and surveillance
operations have been intensified along the border corridor to prevent
infiltration and espionage activities by terrorist elements.”
Makama also reported that troops arrested a suspected Boko
Haram/ISWAP spy in Garaha in Hong LGA of Adamawa state.
Citing security sources, the publication said the suspect, a
civilian, was arrested at about 9:30am on Saturday after allegedly loitering
suspiciously around the perimeter of ‘B Company’.
“According to the sources, troops on duty promptly
intercepted and arrested the individual for further questioning,” Makama said.
“The suspect is currently in custody of B Company, 232
Battalion (Tactical), and is expected to be transferred to battalion
headquarters for detailed investigation.”
Makama added that security officials had begun preliminary
checks to determine the suspect’s possible links to terrorist groups operating
in the north-east.
