Snarling traffic caused by ongoing rehabilitation and rainfall has frayed the nerves of thousands of commuters and motorists plying the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
In the wake of the gridlock that has persisted all week,
David Umahi, minister of works, directed contractors to immediately reopen all
accessible sections.
The minister issued the directive through a statement issued
by Francis Nwaze, his media aide.
Security agencies have been deployed in strategic points
along the corridor to ensure safety and maintain order.
Umahi also confirmed that an earlier accident that worsened
traffic had been cleared.
The Abuja-Kaduna highway is one of Nigeria’s busiest routes,
linking the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to northern states.
Several commuters had complained of exhausting journeys that
stretched far beyond normal travel time due to the combined effects of the
reconstruction and holiday rush.
