Tony Nwoye defects to NDC as party secures third senator in a week

Tony Nwoye, senator representing Anambra north, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), making him the third senator to join the party within a week.

Nwoye announced his defection in a letter read during Wednesday’s plenary by Godswill Akpabio.

“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and my intention to defect to the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC,” Nwoye said.

The lawmaker attributed his decision to “internal divisions and the ongoing multiple litigations at the Federal High Court”.

He added that a recent court judgment affecting the ADC had “unfortunately affected the coalition and stability of the party”.

Nwoye said the development had weakened the coalition structure within the party and made it difficult for the ADC to remain united and functional.

His defection comes a day after Victor Umeh, Anambra central senator, left the ADC for the NDC, citing lingering divisions and litigations within the party.

Rufai Hanga, senator representing Kano central, also recently joined the NDC from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), blaming internal crises and factional disputes for his action.

The latest defections increase the NDC’s strength in the senate to three members.

Following the latest defections, the party composition in the senate now stands at 87 for the APC, seven for the ADC, four for the PDP, four for the NDC, one for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), one for the Accord, and one for the Labour Party.

The NNPP currently has no senator in the upper legislative chamber.

Three senate seats also remain vacant following the deaths of Godiya Akwashiki, Barinada Mpigi and Okey Ezea.

In addition, Jimoh Ibrahim vacated his seat after his appointment as Nigeria’s permanent representative and ambassador plenipotentiary to the United Nations (UN).
