Three members of the House of Representatives from Oyo state, Najimdeen Oyedeji, representing the Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency; Adedeji Olajide of the Ibadan north-west/south-west constituency; and Abass Adigun of the Ibadan north-east/south-east constituency, have resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
TheCable earlier reported that two members of the green
chamber from the state — Anthony Adepoju, representing the Ibarapa
central/north federal constituency; and Ojo Makanjuola, representing the
Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere federal constituency — announced their resignation from the
PDP over lingering legal battles and unresolved internal conflicts.
The latest development comes amid growing speculation that
Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, may defect from the PDP to the Allied Peoples
Movement (APM), following a meeting he reportedly held with the party leaders
at his Ibadan residence on Wednesday.
However, the lawmakers have not stated their next political
destination despite reports linking them with a possible move to the APM
alongside the governor.
In his letter dated May 5 and addressed to the PDP chairman
in Ward 8 of Odinjo-Muslim, Ibadan south-east LGA, Adigun cited “the persistent
internal crises that have continued to destabilise the party”.
The lawmaker, who is the chairman of the house committee on
narcotic drugs, said his time in the PDP gave him the opportunity to build
lasting relationships and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development
of the state.
“I wish to sincerely appreciate the leadership of the party
at the ward, local government, state and national levels, as well as members
and supporters in my constituency, who stood by me throughout my political
journey in the PDP from 2018 up to this moment,” Adigun said.
“I remain grateful for the opportunities given to me to
serve.
“Please accept my assurances of highest regards and kindly
acknowledge receipt of this letter.”
Olajide, in his resignation letter dated May 5 and addressed
to the PDP chairman in Ward 11 of Ibadan south-west LGA, said he quit the PDP
after “extensive consultations” with his “political associates, supporters and
constituents”.
“This decision, though difficult, became necessary in view
of the prevailing realities within the party structure and my desire to
continue to pursue my political aspirations and commitment to public service in
an atmosphere that guarantees inclusiveness, stability and progressive
engagement,” he said.
Olajide added that since joining the party, he had committed
himself “wholeheartedly to its growth and electoral success, which culminated”
in his “emergence and re-election” for another term in the green chamber.
“I remain profoundly grateful to the leadership and members
of the party across all levels for the support, trust and opportunities
extended to me over the years,” the lawmaker said.
“I wish to state that this decision was taken in good faith
and without bitterness. I hold members of the party in high esteem and will
continue to value the relationships built over the years.
“Please accept this letter as my formal resignation from the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective immediately.”
Oyedeji, in his letter addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward
5 of Kajola LGA, said the decision was reached “with a heavy heart” after “due
consultation” in line with his principles, unwavering convictions and political
aspirations.
The lawmaker said he appreciated the opportunities,
experiences and relationships he gained during his time with the party.
“I request that my name be removed from the membership
register of the party and that this resignation is duly acknowledged,” he said.
“Thank you once again for the support and cooperation
extended to me during my period of membership.”
