Shettima leads Nigerian delegation to Wadagni’s inauguration in Benin Republic

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Cotonou, the commercial capital of Benin Republic, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration of President-elect Romuald Wadagni.

Wadagni, who previously served as Benin Republic’s finance minister, secured a landslide victory in the country’s presidential election held on April 12, marking a significant political transition in the West African nation.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to hold on Sunday at the presidential palace in Cotonou.

In a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson to the vice-president, the Nigerian delegation joined other African leaders, diplomats and foreign dignitaries attending the event.

The statement said Shettima’s visit highlights the longstanding diplomatic and economic relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic, particularly in the areas of trade, border cooperation and regional security.

Nigeria and Benin Republic are members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and maintain close ties on regional integration and security collaboration.

Meanwhile, Nigerian troops have been deployed to strategic locations across Cotonou ahead of the inauguration.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the soldiers were deployed as part of coordinated regional security arrangements to secure the inauguration venue and other vulnerable locations within the city.

The publication said surveillance and patrol operations had been intensified around major routes, government facilities, strategic installations and the Presidential Palace ahead of the ceremony.

The inauguration is expected to attract several heads of government and international delegations from across Africa and beyond.

Activities lined up for the event include official state ceremonies, the transfer of presidential insignia and a ceremonial procession linked to events in Porto-Novo, the administrative capital of Benin Republic.

Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria after the inauguration activities.
