‘She worked with Abure’ — Obi’s supporters ask NDC south-west chair to resign

Dayo Ekong, south-west chairperson of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has come under criticism on social media over alleged sabotage of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), during their time in the party.

Ekong, the former Lagos chairperson of the Julius Abure faction of the LP, quit the party on April 3 alongside Dudu Manuga, citing protracted leadership tussles and legal disputes.

She subsequently joined the NDC and was named among the six new national vice-chairpersons representing the geo-political zones of the party on April 7.

Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano, joined the NDC on Sunday alongside key opposition figures from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a post on X on Monday, Ekong welcomed the new entrants, describing their decision as a bold step forward for the party.

“We warmly welcome every Nigerian who has joined this transformative movement,” she wrote.

“Together, through the NDC, we are committed to rebuilding our nation and creating the Nigeria we all envision. This is our moment. We move forward with purpose, unity, and determination as we reclaim and redefine our country.”

‘YOUR ANTECEDENTS DO NOT ALIGN’

However, many social media users who reacted to the post accused her of working against Obi’s interest during their time in the LP.

“Pastor Mrs. Dayo Ekong must resign immediately as chairman of the NDC southwest. Her past actions are not opinions — they are documented facts,” @TrendfusionNG wrote.

“It was her public statements and manoeuvres that complicated Peter Obi’s position in the Labour Party, ultimately contributing to his exit.

“Now the same individual seeks to lead a critical bloc in the NDC while reportedly maintaining ties to the APC and the Tinubu machinery. We cannot fundraise, buy forms, and mobilise voters only to hand our structures to a known political saboteur.”

Another user, D’Empress (@Omatune), wrote, “Madam, are you the same woman that worked with Abure and sold our mandate to the highest bidder? If yes, please pack your load and leave this party for us because e go hot for you and affliction cannot rise a second time.

“Leave or just relegate any viable position you’re currently holding and just be a mere member. Your antecedents do not align with our vision for a better Nigeria. Go to APC or ADC, you’ll see your likes there.”

Blackman (@manzpassion) also posted, “There’s a reason why they positioned this woman in southwest and Lagos. NDC should, as a matter of urgency, remove this woman from any position, otherwise we will see a repeat of 2023. She and all her chairmen in different LGs should be discarded.”

@special_Ada_Ide added, “Whoever allowed you into NDC needs to be investigated. You followed and destroyed LP, now they have sent you to NDC again. Obidients, make we no make a second mistake about this woman.”

Charles Okeke wrote, “The beginning is always sweet and joyful, but standing on the side of justice and the masses thereafter is a serious issue which I truly fear. I was even surprised that Pst. Dayo has dumped Lamido Apapa and Julius Abure, her ‘papa and brother’. Well, may God help us in this journey not to hit a brick wall again when city boys begin activating.”
